Lester horton was a down to earth man. He did not get carried away in fame, drama, or the arts scene. He liked to do his own thing, on his own coast. he believed in studying, research, and training in the studio. A lot of other choreographers before him had been all about feeling, emotions, prefoemance, making a statement, and showing off. I think lester may have been this way because of what was going on in the word around him. It was a time when people were starting to simplify and industrialize. Assembly lines were just being invented and factories and corporations were taking off. The first grocery stores were opening and people were starting to research and create new ways to simplify living. This is almost what Horton was doing for dance. He was researching and creating a way to train the body that was efficient.

I need more specifics here. Can you give me details and examples, dates and places and what kinds of industry. I don't understand your connection between "simplify and industrialize". Try to explain this more clearly.
ReplyDeleteNever underestimate the power of spell check!
1910 The first army tank was invented and led to the invention of the first jet engine plane. In 1912 the first unsinkable cruise ship the titanic sailed and sank. In 1914 the Ford T was the first car to be mass produced on an assembly line. After the ford company started production on an assembly line it spread like crazy and almost every piece of machinery began to be produced on an assembly line rather that a craft made by hand by only a select few people. 1914 was also the beginning of WWI in which all of the guns and army supplies were starting to be made in factories. In 1928 the first television was invented ad put on the market. This simplified the spreading of informations in to households. WWII began in 1939 and pulled our country out of the great depression which began on black tuesday in 1929. Instead of people living poor and simp they were back to work, back to inventing and producing and creating.
ReplyDeleteinteresting and exciting era to live in. You mentioned he was researching, do you know if he made and specific movement that incorporated these industrialized inventions? Did he have a piece that that represented all of these new technological advances?
ReplyDeleteSteph those are cool ideas but when I mentioned researching I meant it as a comparison. Horton researched the human body and how to use it to produce the best outcome. Just like these inventors were researching machines that could produce outcomes like cars changing transportation, and television which changed communication. The way he was thinking is comparable to the way the inventors of his time were thinking
